John Osborn was born in Britain but immigrated to Western Canada following his naval service in the First World War. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers in 1933 and would be sent with his regiment to Hong Kong in late 1941 during the Second World War. The 42-year-old company sergeant major earned the Victoria Cross for his brave actions in the fighting there when he played a leading role in holding off repeated Japanese attacks on his position which culminated in throwing himself on an enemy grenade to save the lives of his fellow soldiers.
