Mainlander arrested for trying to break into ATM in Kwai Chung

A 44-year-old mainlander was arrested after he tried to break into an automated teller machine at the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) branch in Kwai Chung on Friday morning.

At around 6 a.m., a female security officer of the bank noticed the man trying to force open the ATM console with a steel rod on the ground floor of Regent Centre at 63 Wo Yi Hop Road, news website hk01.com reports.

The suspect ran off when he saw the security officer and threw the steel rod into a flower rack about 50 meters away from the ATM.

Police officers later arrested him in the area. The man, surnamed Shang, was found to be holding a two-way entry permit.

He was able to break open the front panel of the ATM, but no alarm sounded.

It is understood that the compartment containing the cash was intact.

Shang will be charged with criminal damage.
