China Announces Plan To Hand Hong Kong Back to Britain By End-2016
By East Asia Tribune -
June 12, 2016
an unexpected move, a representative of China’s Politburo Standing Committee made an announcement on the morning of June 12 to reveal that the PRC will hand back rule of Hong Kong to Great Britain by the end of 2016. Speaking to assembled journalists at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing earlier today, the spokesperson explained that continued violence and protests in Hong Kong over the past two years was the main underlying reason for the decision. “The citizens of Hong Kong have made it clear, through their ongoing pro-democracy protests, that they are no longer satisfied to be part of the great People’s Republic of China. Today, we acknowledge their demands, and accept the ultimatum to return control of the province back to the United Kingdom.”
Britain had earlier ruled Hong Kong for well over a century, handing back control of the territory to China in 1997. Today’s announcement by the PRC is all the more unexpected given that Hong Kong protesters were demanding independence from China, rather than a return to British rule. “We want to have our own government, free of influence from any foreign powers,” stated a pro-democracy protester in Hong Kong after news broke of China’s plan to hand back power to the UK. However, public opinion throughout Hong Kong appears to be in favour of the decision, with several impromptu gatherings of supporters across the city in the hours following the announcement. “While we would rather be independent, being back under British rule is far better than having the Chinese in control,” said one resident who was in favour of the plan. An analyst at a leading Hong Kong securities brokerage spoke to the media to share his views on the likely economic impact. “When the Hang Seng opens on Monday, I would expect to see the index push back to the peak of 30,000 points set back in 2007. The extra stability and reduced sovereign risk of British rule should drive a bull market for Hong Kong.”
A firm date for the handover remains to be confirmed, with the Politburo spokesperson admitting they remained in negotiations with their counterparts in the UK. “Our aim is to transfer control back to Britain by the end of this year.” Some foreign affairs experts have questioned China’s true intention in the deal. “It is unlikely the PRC would relinquish control of Hong Kong so easily, without receiving something in return. In particular, this move may be the first step in China’s ultimate goal of reclaiming the renegade province of Taiwan.”
In other Hong Kong related news, a woman has caused a disturbance at one of the nation’s leading plastic surgery clinics, claiming that the breast implants she was fitted with were smaller than expected.
