Michael, now aged 103 and living in South Kensington, London:
Buster Crabb, who watched the Japanese coming across the water, was among the first casualties in his unit when he was hit in the shoulder by shrapnel from a mortar
As the battle progressed, the Volunteers — dressed in summer uniforms — were soon suffering from freezing night-time conditions and chronic food shortages. Pictured left, Jack Mitchell, and right, Alexander Shihwarg an Buster Crabb
