In his new note, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that all the three variants of the iPhone 8 will continue to feature a Lighting connector. The devices, however, will support USB Power Delivery for fast charging.
This would mean that the iPhone 8 charger will have a USB-C port at one end, with the device also coming with a USB-C to Lightning cable. Apple is looking to source the power management chips from TI, with Cypress supplying the chips for USB-PD support.
Kuo also claims in his report that the premium OLED iPhone 8 will feature even faster charging thanks to its 2-cell L-shaped battery pack design.
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus lack any kind of fast charging technology, while the feature is found even on budget Android devices nowadays. On paper, the inclusion of fast charging might not seem like a big deal but it can easily change one’s charging and smartphone usage habits. In addition to fast charging, all the three iPhone variants will also feature wireless charging.
All the three models will feature a new all-glass design, with the premium third new model featuring a ceramic casing and curved OLED display for a bezel-less design. Recent reports also point to the iPhone 8 coming with an upgraded front-facing camera for 3D facial recognition.
