A UK Minister of State on foreign affairs has said that [#f00e1d]Britain’s ongoing commitment to Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms do not amount to interference by the West in Chinese affairs.[/#f00e1d]
The debate – entitled “Democracy in Hong Kong” – was raised at the UK parliament by Fiona Bruce MP, chair of the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission. She mentioned the disqualification of lawmakers, the jailing of activists, and the joint checkpoint arrangement among other issues facing the UK’s former colony.
Mark Field, Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, said the Sino-British Joint Declaration is in force and remains relevant.
