A bus which caught fire on a busy street in northeast China exploded just two minutes after all of its 50 passengers had been evacuated.

The left rear tyre of the no.36 bus initially blew out, causing a small explosion at the rear of the vehicle as it made a right turn at a set of crossroads in central Harbin around 1:30pm on Sunday, reports Chinese news portal The Paper.

As a fire broke out underneath the vehicle, travellers tried to kick open the middle door of the bus before a man eventually managed to pull it in on itself. Passengers poured out, tripping and falling over each other as they went, as a mad rush to escape the blaze ensued. Fortunately, everyone escaped without major injury.

The driver and workers from nearby shops used fire extinguishers to attempt to put the fire out, but it proved too large to control.

Two minutes later, the bus exploded and clouds of black smoke rose from the burning vehicle.

The fire was put out at 1.41pm by firefighters. One person received slight burns to their hands and face, and is currently receiving hospital treatment.
