印度政府決定修改刑法，強姦12歲以下女童可被判處死刑，並要求強姦案的調查和審訊分別在兩個月內完成。不過，有人權組織質疑新例未必能防止強姦案發生。

2012年新德里一名女大學生於巴士上被輪姦致死，四名犯人被處以死刑，至今仍未伏法。當年這宗案件轟動全球，但印度的強姦問題之後一直未有改善。在2016年印度共發生四萬宗強姦案，當中四成受害人是兒童，即平均每天有逾50名兒童被強姦。
