A new film by Masaaki Yuasa, the director of acclaimed anime like Mind Game, The Tatami Galaxy and Netflix’s Devilman Crybaby, is heading to theaters in August. First released in Japan back in 2017, The Night is Short, Walk On Girl will screen for just two days in select theaters across the country.
From the looks of its debut teaser, The Night is Short, Walk On Girl harkens back to the abstract style Yuasa pioneered with The Tatami Galaxy. That TV series ran for 11 episodes in 2010, and it remains one of the most curious, ambitious works of recent years. Both of these anime feature characters with clean, thin outlines; a busy color palette; and fluid animation that allows the world to bend and twist beyond what’s humanly possible.
