Suzuki stops car production in southeastern China

Japan's Suzuki Motor says it will stop producing vehicles in southeastern China due to sluggish sales in the country.

Suzuki announced on Friday that it completed a transfer of all equity in Changhe Suzuki to a Chinese automaker. Suzuki had held 46 percent of shares in the joint venture firm.

Suzuki had been producing minivans and other vehicles at Changhe Suzuki's factory in Jiangxi Province since 1995.

The annual production peaked in 2014 at 90,000 units. But the number plunged to less than one-fourth in 2017.

Suzuki says it will continue producing vehicles at other factories in China.

But the business situation in China is severe for Suzuki, which excels in production of compact cars. Chinese consumers tend to choose large vehicles or luxury cars as the country's economy has been growing.
